Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has implemented a new policy to assist female employees in their maternity journey. Pre-childbirth (1 year), maternity (1 year), and post-maternity (3 years) are all covered under the policy.

The policy incorporates various innovative provisions, such as six months of flexible work and a 24-month hybrid work option from the base location for female employees following childbirth. The policy also permits female employees to travel with their child (up to the age of two years) and a caretaker for important work-related overnight domestic travel.

M&M's New Policy Highlights

  • Five-year support for female employees on their parenthood journey.
  • After childbirth, there will be six months of flexible work and a 24-month hybrid work option from the base site.
  • Option to travel with a child (up to 2 years old) and a caretaker for critical work-related domestic overnight travel.

Impact of New Policy

The new policy at M&M is expected to improve the company's capacity to attract and retain female talent. It is also intended to make manufacturing more female-friendly.

Companies like Tata Sons are also introducing flexible policies to retain female employees at various periods of their lives. One of India's major companies, Tata Sons, has been a pioneer in providing supportive policies for female employees.

Tata Sons provides women employees with the flexibility to determine their working hours in addition to 18 months of half-pay, half-day post-maternity care. Employees with five years of service are also eligible for a year of leave for a variety of caring obligations.

Ruzbeh Irani, President of Mahindra Group's Human Resources division, highlighted the company's commitment to retaining and bringing gender diversity, as well as ensuring women have complete job security and work-life balance. He went on to say that their choice to go with a five-year plan originates from insights acquired through carefully listening to women employees at all levels, embracing a more holistic perspective.

M&M's new policy is the best among manufacturing organizations, with women employees receiving an average of 2.4 months of support during their maternity journey. The initiative aims to attract and retain female talent while also making manufacturing a more female-friendly business.
