LeafyBus, India’s first long-distance electric bus operator, has partnered with Eicher Trucks & Buses to deploy 100 electric intercity sleeper buses on major national routes. This move aims to promote clean mobility and reduce the use of diesel buses in long-haul passenger travel across the country.
The rollout will start with 35 electric sleeper buses scheduled to be deployed by March 31, 2026. The remaining buses will be introduced in phases over the next 18 months. These buses will operate on high-demand routes such as Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Lucknow, and other key intercity corridors planned as part of LeafyBus’s expansion strategy.
The electric bus leasing for this project will be managed by Enetra EV Private Limited, which will support fleet scaling, route expansion, and operational readiness.
This partnership marks the entry of Volvo Group into India’s intercity electric bus segment through VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd., its joint venture with Eicher Motors Limited. Teams from LeafyBus and Eicher are working closely on route planning, charging infrastructure setup, uptime solutions, and overall operational support to ensure smooth intercity operations.
Eicher Trucks & Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd., manufactures Eicher-branded trucks and buses and also distributes Volvo Trucks in India.
The deployment will feature the Skyline Pro E 13.5m electric intercity sleeper bus, designed specifically for long-distance travel. It comes with a 36+D seating and sleeper layout, including upper and lower berths for passenger comfort.
The bus is powered by a 400 kWh LFP battery paired with a 235 kW permanent magnet motor. For improved ride quality and safety, it includes front and rear air suspension, advanced braking systems, and energy-efficient technologies suited for intercity use.
LeafyBus currently operates daily electric bus services on the Delhi-Dehradun route and is expanding its footprint across India. The company has secured USD 4.1 million in funding from Enetra India Pvt. Ltd. to support fleet growth, charging infrastructure development, and new route launches.
As part of its growth plan, LeafyBus aims to introduce at least one new electric intercity travel corridor every month, strengthening its position in the electric long-distance travel segment.
Enetra EV Private Limited focuses on leasing electric buses and trucks and works closely with fleet operators and manufacturers. Through partnerships like this, the company is playing a key role in accelerating India’s transition toward zero-emission commercial transportation.
This collaboration between LeafyBus, Eicher, and Enetra EV highlights a major step forward for electric intercity travel in India, offering cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable mobility options for long-distance passengers.
