India is fast becoming a key player in Daimler Truck’s global plans. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), once a new entrant, is now guiding global manufacturing strategy. The latest example is Daimler’s new truck manufacturing facility in Indonesia, which has been built with full support from DICV. This move underscores India’s growing influence in Daimler Truck's global operations.
Thirteen years ago, DICV was just starting in the commercial vehicle industry. Today, it has transformed into a global mentor for other Daimler facilities. This shift from learner to leader is a major milestone for India in the global automotive sector.
Satyakam Arya, Managing Director and CEO of DICV, expressed pride in this achievement, saying,
“Our capabilities are now shaping the global narrative, not just supporting it.”
This quote shows how India’s role has evolved from a support function to a leadership position in Daimler’s worldwide strategy.
Daimler selected DICV to lead the Indonesia plant for several key reasons:
Proven Performance: Over 12 years, DICV has shown consistent success. It was the first unit in Daimler’s network to fully localise five key engine parts, cylinder block, head, connecting rod, camshaft, and crankshaft, known as the 5 Cs.
Trusted Suppliers: Indian suppliers have proven reliable, and now they provide components to Daimler plants globally.
High Localisation: DICV has achieved over 90% localisation for its trucks, helping to reduce costs and improve supply chain strength.
Innovations for India: DICV introduced several industry-firsts, such as air-conditioned cabins in trucks. It also developed a strong brand and network under BharatBenz and achieved an 80% customer retention rate.
These achievements gave Daimler the confidence to replicate DICV’s success in Indonesia.
Indonesia is similar to India in many ways, it’s a growing market with similar product needs. The HX-based heavy-duty trucks, which have done well in India, are already accepted in Indonesia.
Additionally, Indonesia’s booming mining industry has increased the need for durable and efficient trucks. This further supports Daimler’s decision to use DICV’s experience in setting up the new Indonesian plant.
DICV stands out in Daimler’s global network for its lean and frugal work culture. The team is known for:
Fast decision-making
Cost-effective production
Early adoption of digital tools
High-quality standards
This approach made India a model factory for Daimler’s global operations, especially in setting up the new Indonesia facility.
Unlike India’s full localisation, Indonesia will follow a selective localisation strategy. This means only parts that make sense economically and technologically will be produced locally.
Currently, Indonesia lacks India’s strong supplier base. However, if needed, Daimler may use Indian suppliers under free trade agreements to supply parts to Indonesia.
DICV played a major role in building the Indonesia plant. The Indian team helped design the plant layout, set up workflows, and implement smart manufacturing processes.
Moreover, Indian engineers travelled to Indonesia to assist with the setup. Four engineers from India are still working at the site to ensure smooth operations. This shows DICV’s active involvement and support in Daimler’s global expansion.
This new Indonesian plant marks the start of a new chapter for DICV. The Indian unit is no longer just following instructions from headquarters. Instead, it is now a global centre of expertise.
DICV’s growth from a new unit to a mentor shows its strength in leadership, innovation, and execution. Today, India is not just a part of Daimler’s global strategy; it is helping to lead it.

Daimler India’s rise from a local player to a global mentor showcases India’s growing influence in the automotive sector. With its proven track record, innovative practices, and skilled workforce, DICV is now guiding Daimler’s global expansion, marking a proud moment for India’s manufacturing capabilities on the world stage.
