India inaugurates its first swappable battery heavy-duty electric trucks in Haryana, enabling 7-minute battery swaps, improving logistics efficiency, and supporting the nation’s clean mobility and sustainability goals.
7-minute battery swap time.
Reduced operational costs.
Lower carbon emissions.
Boost to logistics efficiency.
Supports India’s 2070 carbon-neutral goal.
India has taken a big leap toward green logistics as Union Minister for Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari jointly inaugurated the country’s first swappable battery heavy-duty electric trucks and a swap-cum-charging station in Sonepat, Haryana.
This marks a significant development in India’s electric mobility ecosystem, especially in the heavy commercial vehicle segment, paving the way for cleaner and more efficient freight operations.
Rapid Battery Swapping: The new technology allows battery replacement in just seven minutes, compared to the two-hour charging time of regular electric trucks.
Improved Logistics Efficiency: With reduced downtime and faster turnaround, freight operators can benefit from higher operational efficiency and better energy optimization.
Lower Cost and Emissions: The project aims to reduce operational costs and cut carbon emissions, supporting India’s sustainability and energy transition goals.
Part of National Clean Mobility Mission: The launch aligns with India’s carbon-neutral transport goal by 2070, promoting an energy-efficient logistics network across the country.
H D Kumaraswamy, Minister for Heavy Industries, said, “This swappable battery technology marks a major milestone in India’s clean mobility journey. With faster battery replacement and improved operational efficiency, this project will accelerate EV adoption in the commercial sector.”
He added that this initiative supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of energy independence by 2047 and reinforces India’s role as a leader in sustainable transport solutions.
Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, highlighted that innovations like these will revolutionize India’s logistics landscape, bringing both economic advantages and environmental benefits to the transport industry.
The swappable battery heavy-duty EV truck project is a pioneering initiative that represents a major step toward decarbonizing India’s logistics sector.
By integrating fast charging, enhanced energy efficiency, and ease of operation, the project sets a new benchmark for commercial EVs in India.
As the government continues to push forward with clean mobility policies and the expansion of EV infrastructure, battery swapping technology is expected to gain momentum, particularly in freight, industrial, and high-utilization sectors, paving the way for a greener and more efficient transportation ecosystem.
