This certification is for its Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT), which provides accurate measurement and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freight transportation.

Key Highlights:

The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), has made history by becoming the first organization in India to receive ISO 14083 certification. This certification is for its Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT), which provides accurate measurement and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freight transportation. The tool helps organizations meet international sustainability reporting standards.

Transportation Sector’s Growing Emissions

In India, the transportation sector contributes 14% of the country’s total GHG emissions, with freight transportation alone responsible for nearly 40% of these emissions. Projections suggest that transportation emissions could quadruple by 2050 without the adoption of cleaner technologies, potentially reaching 1.17 billion tonnes of CO₂ and increasing the sector's share to 19% of total emissions.

Accurate emissions measurement, such as that enabled by the TEMT, is seen as the first major step toward reducing these emissions.

Key Features of the TEMT

The TEMT, developed by IIMB, is equipped with India-specific emissions factors validated under ISO 14083 standards. Key features of the tool include:

The tool provides precise calculations of emissions from fuel combustion and electricity usage, helping businesses create effective reduction strategies.

Integration with ULIP for Sustainability

In a significant advancement, the TEMT’s emissions factors API has been integrated into the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), an initiative by the Government of India. This integration allows logistics players to seamlessly calculate emissions, track carbon footprints, and explore greener transportation modes. The API’s features are designed to promote transparency and sustainability in the logistics sector.

Research and Innovation at the Lab

The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab, established in 2023 in collaboration with Transport Corporation of India Ltd (TCI), focuses on research and consulting in sustainable supply chain management. Its work prioritizes decarbonization of transportation and sustainable procurement. The lab continues to innovate solutions that drive sustainability in India’s logistics and supply chain sectors.
