Hero MotoCorp's Surge S32 is the first electric vehicle approved under India's new L2-5 category, allowing it to switch between two-wheeler and three-wheeler modes. The modular vehicle features 40 patents and supports flexible mobility.
The handover of the Type Approval Certificate from Nitin Gadkari to Surge EV marks a significant regulatory achievement. The L2-5 category was created to describe modular vehicles that can be coupled and decoupled as needed. This new category supports vehicles that combine a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler, offering flexibility for different operational needs.
The Surge S32 is positioned as the world's first vehicle capable of transitioning between a three-wheeler and a two-wheeler. This modular approach aims to provide economic value to customers and has the potential to transform mobility solutions across India.
The Surge S32 combines an electric scooter with a rear three-wheeler module. When docked, the scooter acts as the front unit of the three-wheeler but remains fully functional as a separate two-wheeler. Users can convert the vehicle from one format to another in about three minutes, allowing for both personal and business mobility.
The vehicle is Type Approval certified, making it the first in the new L2-5 category. Surge, a startup supported by Hero MotoCorp's HeroHatch initiative, is developing the S32. The vehicle was first displayed at Hero World 2024 as part of efforts to explore new mobility solutions during India's electric vehicle transition.
The Surge S32 stands out for its ability to switch quickly between a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler. The design features an electric auto-rickshaw with an e-scooter inserted as the front wheel. In this setup, the scooter's rear wheel is lifted onto the rickshaw platform. Both the auto-rickshaw and the e-scooter have separate powertrains and battery packs but share controls through an electronic connector. The handlebar manages the brakes and drivetrain for both units when connected.
The Surge S32 holds 40 patents, highlighting its innovative approach to modular electric mobility. This development is part of a broader effort to advance electric vehicle technology and support India's transition to sustainable transportation.
