The government is exploring new technologies to improve toll collection efficiency. One such innovation under consideration is the ANPR-FASTag based barrier-less tolling system.
Key Highlights:
Recently, many reports circulating on social media have suggested that the FASTag system will be replaced by a satellite-based toll collection system starting May 1. Social media reports caused confusion among daily highway travellers, but the ministry called these claims false. At present, FASTag will remain the primary toll collection method across India. The government confirmed no plans exist to scrap FASTag.
Ministry Clarifies Misinformation
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially refused these reports, labelling them as false. In an official statement, MoRTH clarified that there is no plan to replace the FASTag system nationwide with satellite-based tolling from May 1. The FASTag system will continue to operate as usual.
Future Plans: Barrier-Less Tolling
While reaffirming the FASTag's continuity, the government is exploring new technologies to improve toll collection efficiency. One such innovation under consideration is the ANPR-FASTag based barrier-less tolling system.
About ANPR Technology
ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition. This technology will allow for seamless vehicle identification by reading number plates. This technology will integrate with the existing FASTag infrastructure, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas.
Pilot Implementation and Public Feedback
Currently, the government has initiated the tender process to implement the ANPR-FASTag system at selected toll plazas. The success of these pilots and public response will determine their potential nationwide rollout.
Compliance and Consequences
In case of non-compliance or discrepancies in toll payments, vehicle owners may receive e-notices, and FASTag blocking may occur. Highway toll systems affect millions of travellers daily. FASTag has streamlined payments, but long queues at toll plazas remain a challenge. The ANPR-FASTag system could reduce delays, saving time for commuters. The government’s focus on testing ensures only effective solutions are scaled up.

CMV360 Says
The government’s clarification brings relief to daily commuters who rely on FASTag. While satellite-based tolling rumours are false, the government is open to advanced technologies. The ANPR-FASTag system shows promise, but its nationwide rollout depends on successful trials. For now, FASTag users can continue relying on the existing setup without changes.
