The Agriculture Department is offering gypsum fertilizer at a 75% subsidy to help farmers improve soil health and boost crop production. This move will especially benefit those growing pulses, oilseeds, and root crops, which respond well to gypsum treatment.
Gypsum is a naturally occurring soft sulfate mineral made of calcium sulfate dihydrate. It usually appears white or gray and can have other colors due to impurities. In agriculture, gypsum is widely used as a fertilizer. It provides plants with sulfur and calcium, both essential nutrients for healthy growth.
Using gypsum has multiple benefits for soil and crop health:
Improves soil fertility by adding sulfur and calcium.
Enhances crop nutrition, especially for pulses, oilseeds, and root crops.
Increases yields while reducing input costs.
Boosts oil content in oilseed crops.
Improves soil structure by breaking hard layers and increasing water retention.
Helps balance soil pH, which reduces crop diseases.
Reduces the need for other fertilizers, like phosphorus.
The Agriculture Department is providing 75% subsidy on gypsum. This means farmers only need to pay 25% of the cost.
One bag costs Rs. 216.10, but with the subsidy, the farmer pays much less.
A farmer can get up to 6 quintals (12 bags) of gypsum for 2 hectares of land.
Currently, 521 metric tons of gypsum are available with the department for distribution.
Farmers can get gypsum from the government seed stores in all blocks.
Subsidy is available through POS machines, where farmers verify their identity using a thumb impression.
Farmers should apply gypsum once a year, at the rate of 2 to 3 quintals per acre.
After applying gypsum, it is advised to flood the field with water to mix it well before sowing the crop.
