American auto giant Ford is considering re-entering the Indian market, focusing on the light commercial vehicle (LCV) and pick-up segments.
According to a source close to the matter, the company is exploring both internal combustion engine and electric commercial vehicles (EVs) for the Indian market. However, when asked for a comment, Ford India's spokesman declined to respond.
Ford’s Re-Entry Plan in India
Last week, Ford announced its official re-entry into India by submitting a Letter of Intent to the Tamil Nadu government. The company intends to utilize the Maraimalainagar plant for manufacturing vehicles, primarily for export purposes.
Ford International Markets Group's president, Kay Hart, stated that the decision demonstrates the company's commitment to India and aims to use manufacturing experience in Tamil Nadu to expand into global markets.
Challenges in the EV Market
Despite Ford’s ambitions, there are challenges ahead. Sources in the Tamil Nadu government revealed that ongoing uncertainty in the EV market has delayed Ford's final decision.
A senior government official mentioned that Ford plans to make a final call on its India strategy by December. The company is being cautious about long-term decisions, especially concerning partnerships, due to the current market conditions.
Possible Partnerships and Collaborations
Ford is reportedly considering partnerships in the commercial vehicle segment in India. There is also speculation that Ford may expand its existing global partnership with Volkswagen to enter the Indian market, particularly in the EV sector.
However, when approached for comment, Volkswagen’s global spokesman Tobias Riepe confirmed that there are no current plans for Volkswagen commercial vehicles to enter the Indian market.
