To help farmers avoid losses and get better prices for their produce, the Bihar government has announced a 75% subsidy on the construction of onion storage structures. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce post-harvest wastage and ensure fair market value for onion growers across the state.

Due to the lack of proper storage facilities, farmers in Bihar often suffer heavy losses or are forced to sell onions at throwaway prices. To tackle this issue, the government will now provide financial assistance to build modern onion storage structures.
Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said, “The state government is committed to empowering farmers and preventing post-harvest losses. Through this scheme, modern storage units will help farmers store their onions safely and sell them at better prices later.”
Under the Sabji Vikas Yojana, farmers constructing a 50 MT onion storage structure will receive a maximum subsidy of ₹4.5 lakh out of the total estimated construction cost of ₹6 lakh. This grant will be provided in two installments via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
First Installment: After completing civil works like foundation, plinth, and roof.
Second Installment: After completing the full structure.
The construction must be carried out as per the approved departmental estimate and map.
The scheme is being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojanain the financial year 2025-26, with a total budget of ₹4.5 crore. It will cover 23 districts in Bihar:
Bhojpur, Buxar, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Lakhisarai, Nawada, Saran, Sheikhpura, Siwan, Aurangabad, Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Khagaria, Madhubani, Munger, Nalanda, Patna, Purnia, Rohtas, Samastipur, and Vaishali.
Each farmer family will be eligible for one onion storage structure under this scheme.

To benefit from this scheme:
Farmers must register on the DBT portal of the Agriculture Department.
Selection will be made through a category-wise online lottery system.
Construction work must start within 15 days of receiving the work order, or the order will be cancelled.
Nodal officers have been appointed in each block to assist farmers with registration, site selection, and structure construction.

This initiative is a big step towards strengthening Bihar's agricultural infrastructure.
