Delhi’s efforts to promote clean and green public transport are now gaining global recognition. On Thursday, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh met with a delegation from Norway to discuss electric vehicle (EV) adoption and exchange best practices. The meeting focused on policies, practical models, and ideas that can help cities move towards a sustainable transport future.
Norway is widely regarded as a global leader in EV adoption, with most of its public transport already running on electric power. Despite this, the Norwegian visitors appreciated Delhi’s progress, especially the introduction of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI) buses.
The delegation praised the city’s 9-metre DEVI buses, which are being effectively used for last-mile connectivity. These buses make travel easier for passengers by connecting metro stations to residential and workplace areas. While Delhi is keen to learn from Norway’s vast experience in EV infrastructure, such as charging stations, parking solutions, and policies, Norway also found Delhi’s public EV model worth studying.
The DEVI buses are designed not just for clean mobility but also for passenger safety and inclusivity. Key features include:
CCTV cameras and GPS tracking for security
Panic buttons for emergency situations
Low-floor design with motorised ramps and retractable steps for elderly passengers and people with disabilities
These features ensure that the buses are comfortable, safe, and accessible for all. The Norwegian team expressed special appreciation for this people-friendly approach, noting that Delhi is focusing on both sustainability and commuter needs.
Both Delhi and Norway agreed that collaboration will be the way forward. As part of this partnership, Delhi will send experts to Norway to study EV infrastructure, while Norway will examine how Delhi successfully operates electric buses at scale in a large and densely populated city.
This exchange highlighted that the meeting was not just about discussions but also about real-world models, practical solutions, and a shared vision for a greener tomorrow. Delhi’s DEVI buses have now positioned the city as an example worth following on the global EV map.
Delhi’s DEVI buses have gained international attention, impressing a Norwegian delegation with their smart design, safety features, and accessibility. With collaboration between Delhi and Norway, both sides aim to share knowledge and create stronger, cleaner, and more sustainable urban mobility systems. This partnership is a step toward a greener global future where electric public transport becomes the norm.
