Delhi launches electric inter-state bus services to 17 cities, offering eco-friendly, affordable, and comfortable travel options across seven states with daily operations.
Key Highlights:
In a major step toward greener mobility, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has officially launched electric bus services connecting the national capital with 17 cities across seven neighbouring states. This move is part of the government’s broader vision to promote clean transport while improving inter-state travel options.
Connecting Delhi with Key Cities
The newly launched electric buses will run daily to cities in Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh. These cities were selected based on high passenger footfall from Delhi, mainly due to tourism, business, and family visits.
Key routes include:
Special emphasis has been given to religious and pilgrimage sites, including Ayodhya, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Amritsar, making these buses a convenient option for spiritual travellers.
Affordable and Convenient Travel
To ensure wide adoption, the fare for these electric inter-state buses has been kept economical. For instance:
Passengers can book tickets online or directly at ISBT counters in Delhi. This offers flexibility and ease for both regular commuters and occasional travellers.
How the Service Will Operate
These electric bus services follow the ‘Gross Cost Model’:
This model allows for better accountability while ensuring that the operational standards remain consistent.
Charging Infrastructure in Place
Understanding the specific needs of electric buses, the Delhi government has already installed dedicated charging stations at all three major Inter-State Bus Terminals:
These charging facilities will ensure that the buses can run smoothly on a daily schedule without disruptions.
Comfortable and Tech-Enabled Ride
The DTC has confirmed that the new electric buses will offer several features to enhance the passenger experience:
These upgrades are designed to provide a smoother, quieter, and more efficient ride compared to traditional diesel buses.
Expansion Plans Underway
The DTC is not stopping here. In a bid to further strengthen its electric fleet, it has proposed the purchase of 30 more fully built, AC electric buses, along with 10 chargers and a 10-year Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC). The contract is expected to be handed over to a private company.
This is part of Delhi’s “Viksit Delhi Sankalp Patra-2025”, a roadmap to modernise the city’s infrastructure with sustainable solutions. The reintroduction of services to states like Bihar and Jammu is also on the agenda.
A Win for Both Environment and Revenue
The electric inter-state service isn’t just an environmental move; it also makes financial sense. The Delhi government believes that the initiative will act as a profitable venture by boosting ridership and generating steady revenue.
By reviving and expanding inter-state services, DTC aims to:
