Up to 100% subsidy for small and marginal farmers.
Financial assistance of ₹94.50 per teak plant.
50% subsidy for large farmers and institutions.
Tissue culture plants offer faster growth and better-quality timber.
Intercropping helps farmers earn income before teak harvest.
Teak farming is emerging as a profitable long-term investment for farmers in Chhattisgarh. To increase farmers income and expand the state's green cover, the Chhattisgarh government has launched a major initiative to promote commercial teak cultivation on private land. Under the scheme, eligible farmers can receive up to 100% government subsidy for planting teak, making it easier to start tree-based farming with minimal investment.
The government believes that teak cultivation can provide farmers with a secure source of long-term income while also contributing to environmental conservation and climate balance.
The scheme was highlighted during a workshop on "Teak Management and Advanced Teak Planting" held at Aranya Bhavan in Nava Raipur. Speaking at the event, Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap said that teak is one of the world's most valuable and durable timber species, with strong and consistent demand in domestic and international markets.
He encouraged farmers to adopt scientific methods of teak cultivation to achieve better productivity and higher returns in the future.
The subsidy has been designed according to the category of farmers, with special preference given to small and marginal farmers.
Farmer Category | Plantation Area | Government Subsidy | Financial Assistance |
Small and Marginal Farmers | Up to 5 acres | 100% Subsidy | ₹94.50 per plant |
Large Farmers and Institutions | More than 5 acres | 50% Subsidy | 50% of the prescribed subsidy rate |
Small and marginal farmers planting teak on up to five acres will receive complete financial support of ₹94.50 per plant. Large farmers and institutions cultivating teak on more than five acres will receive a 50% subsidy.
The government aims to encourage more farmers to adopt tree-based farming, allowing them to earn additional income from timber alongside traditional agriculture.
Experts at the workshop stressed the importance of using tissue culture teak plants instead of conventional saplings.
According to Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap and experts, tissue culture plants grow faster, produce better-quality timber, and develop straighter, knot-free trunks that fetch higher market prices.
Teak is widely known as the "King of Wood" because of its exceptional strength, termite resistance, durability, and long lifespan. It is extensively used in furniture manufacturing, building construction, and interior decoration, ensuring steady market demand.
One concern among farmers is that teak trees require several years to mature. To address this, experts recommended intercropping during the early years of plantation.
Farmers can cultivate pulses, oilseeds, and other short-duration crops between teak rows, providing regular annual income while the trees continue to grow.
In addition, the first pruning is generally carried out after 8 to 10 years, allowing farmers to sell the pruned wood and start earning before the final timber harvest.
Scientists Dr. Rekha R. Warrier and Dr. R. Yashoda from Coimbatore informed farmers that Chhattisgarh's climate and soil are highly suitable for teak cultivation.
The regions with excellent potential include:
Bijapur
Bhopalpatnam
Kota
Ambagarh Chowki
Raigarh
Saraipali
Narayanpur
Farmers in these districts can take advantage of the subsidy scheme and establish a sustainable source of long-term income.
The workshop concluded in the presence of Forest Force Chief Arun Pandey and other senior officials.
Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap appealed to farmers to adopt teak plantation on a large scale with the slogan "Teak in the field, every farmer prosperous."
He said the initiative is not only meant to increase farmers' earnings but also to strengthen green cover, support environmental conservation, and maintain climate balance. The state government expects more farmers to benefit from the subsidy and turn teak cultivation into a profitable long-term business.

The Chhattisgarh government's teak plantation scheme offers farmers a valuable opportunity to build long-term wealth while supporting environmental conservation. With up to 100% subsidy, scientific planting methods, and the option of intercropping for regular income, the scheme reduces financial risk and improves profitability. Farmers, especially small and marginal ones, can benefit from lower investment costs and create a sustainable source of income through commercial teak cultivation.
