Why Farmers Need Loans

Farmers often take loans for various agricultural needs such as:

  • Buying seeds and fertilizers

  • Irrigation and water-related expenses

  • Plowing and sowing

  • Harvesting and other farm-related work

While cooperative banks offer loans at zero percent interest, some farmers also borrow from private moneylenders at higher rates. When farmers are unable to repay these loans on time, they are marked as defaulters and face heavy interest and penalties.

Who Will Benefit from This Decision?

The announcement will benefit farmers in Madhya Pradesh who took loans from cooperative banks but could not repay them on time. According to Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the government will now pay the interest on loans of such defaulter farmers. This benefit will be available to farmers who failed to repay their loans by March 31, 2025.

Announcement After Meeting with Farmer’s Delegation

The announcement was made after a delegation from theBharatiya Kisan Sangh met the Chief Minister. The delegation highlighted the issue of farmers who defaulted on their cooperative bank loans. The CM responded positively and assured that the government will take responsibility for paying the interest.

How This Will Help Thousands of Farmers

There are 4,523 Primary Agricultural Credit Cooperative Societies in Madhya Pradesh. These societies give zero-interest loans to farmers for their farming needs. However, if the loan is not repaid in time, interest and penalties are added. This becomes a burden on poor farmers.

With the government’s new decision, thousands of farmers are expected to get relief. They can now focus on farming without the stress of rising interest rates.

Interest-Free Loans for Rabi and Kharif Seasons

The Madhya Pradesh government provides interest-free loans to farmers for both Rabi and Kharif crops. These loans are given through cooperative societies and cover expenses like seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation.

But if a farmer fails to repay on time, they are considered defaulters. The state government has fixed the last repayment date as:

  • March 28 for Kharif crops

  • June 15 for Rabi crops

After these dates, a 10% or higher interest is charged, which many farmers struggle to pay.

Land Acquisition Amendment Draft 2025 Also Discussed

During the meeting with the Chief Minister, the farmer’s delegation also raised concerns about the Land Acquisition Amendment Draft 2025. They demanded that the land should not be acquired without farmers’ consent. Officials from three states and the Madhya Pradesh government were part of this discussion. A presentation on the amended bill was also given.
