Despite the removal of the auto LPG refuelling cap, commuters face longer waits and higher fares as drivers reduce services due to rising fuel costs and inconsistent LPG supply, leading to fare hikes on several city routes.
The main challenge now comes from a fresh hike in auto fuel prices. Many auto operators have reduced services, especially during non-peak hours. Even during office rush, the availability of autos has tightened. Drivers are adopting new strategies to manage rising costs, such as only operating when they can secure at least 50 to 60 percent occupancy on return trips.
This shift has led to fewer autos on the road and longer queues at major stands. At key hubs like Chowrasta and Garia, more autos are queuing, and operators are requesting extra parking space from local traffic authorities.
Swapan Dutta, an auto operator, explained that a trip from Chowrasta to Tollygunge earns about ₹96, but nearly ₹60 is needed for gas on the return journey. Without enough passengers both ways, drivers risk losses. Fuel supply, while better overall, remains inconsistent at individual pumps. Drivers often spend hours and extra fuel searching for stations with available LPG.
One driver reported using 2 to 6 kg of gas just to reach a pump, especially when coming from the outskirts. Commuters also face delays. Sutirtha Banerjee, a Silpara resident, waited over 40 minutes at Tollygunge Metro for an auto to Sakherbazar. Many autos at the stand had run out of gas. Amit Saha, a daily commuter, waited nearly 15 minutes at Sovabazar for an auto to Ultadanga and noted that even buses were scarce.
Several routes have raised fares in response to the situation. The Chakraberia-Lake Gardens route has increased fares by ₹2. In Dum Dum, at least two routes have implemented similar fare hikes. These changes reflect the ongoing struggle of operators to balance costs with service availability.
While the removal of the auto LPG cap aimed to improve operations, rising fuel prices and inconsistent supply continue to challenge both drivers and commuters. The situation remains difficult, with longer waits and higher fares persisting across the city.
