Spread across 70 acres, the integrated manufacturing facility is designed mainly for electric commercial vehicles, with a strong focus on electric buses. The plant currently has an annual production capacity of 2,500 vehicles, which will be expanded to 5,000 units in phases. It employs a largely local workforce from Uttar Pradesh, including a notable share of women employees, supporting regional employment generation.
The Lucknow plant is described as Ashok Leyland’s most advanced manufacturing facility globally. It includes multiple sustainability-driven features such as rooftop solar panels, LED lighting systems, battery-operated internal logistics, positive water balance measures, and zero-discharge operations. These initiatives align with the company’s long-term sustainability roadmap.
Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said the new plant marks a major milestone for the company in Uttar Pradesh. He highlighted the group’s commitment to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable mobility while reinforcing Ashok Leyland’s journey towards achieving net-zero emissions.
Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, stated that Uttar Pradesh’s consistent focus on environmental responsibility made it an ideal partner for the company’s green mobility plans. He added that the highly automated, technology-driven plant reflects Ashok Leyland’s emphasis on global quality standards and innovation, especially in electric bus manufacturing.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath revealed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in September 2023, with land allotment completed by January 2024. The plant was built within 18 months, showcasing the state’s fast-track approval and governance system.
He also shared that Uttar Pradesh accounted for 19 percent of India’s total EV market in 2024. Around 700 electric buses are currently operating in the state under the FAME I and FAME II schemes. The electric bus produced at the new facility is a 17–18 seater, priced at approximately ₹15 lakh, and is suitable for school transport and inter-city travel.
The Chief Minister announced that the Hinduja Group will soon sign an MoU with the Uttar Pradesh government to provide skill development training to 10,000 youth every year at the facility. He added that Uttar Pradesh currently contributes 9.5 percent to India’s GDP and aims to become a $1 trillion economy by 2029–30.
The plant has been established under Uttar Pradesh’s FDI and Fortune 500 policy and will receive support under the state’s Electric Vehicle Policy. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Cabinet Ministers Suresh Khanna and Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, MLA Rajeshwar Singh, diplomats, industrialists, and Ashok Leyland’s global dealer and supplier partners.
Ashok Leyland is the commercial vehicle manufacturing arm of the Hinduja Group. The company has set a long-term target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2048 and continues to expand its electric and sustainable mobility footprint across India.
