From October 1, 2025, all new medium and heavy trucks in India must have AC cabins to improve driver comfort and safety, as per a new government rule.

Key Highlights:

India is all set to bring a major change to its commercial vehicle sector. Starting October 1, 2025, all new medium and heavy trucks must have air-conditioned (AC) cabins. This announcement was made by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who says it will improve working conditions for truck drivers in India. Nitin Gadkari said it is unfair to expect truck drivers to work in extreme heat without basic facilities. He believes this change is much needed and will benefit both drivers and the transport sector in the long run.

What the Official Rule Says

According to the notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH):

  1. From October 1, 2025, all N2 and N3 category trucks must have AC cabins.
  2. These AC systems must follow the IS14618:2022 standard to ensure quality and safety.

What Are N2 and N3 Category Trucks?

These include most medium and heavy trucks used in logistics and transportation across India.

Why This Step Was Important

Truck drivers often drive long hours in very hot weather, especially during Indian summers when temperatures can go above 45°C. These tough conditions affect their health, comfort, and road safety. This idea of AC cabins was first proposed in 2016, but it faced delays due to concerns about cost. Now, the government has decided to go ahead with it to support driver welfare.

What This Means for Drivers

This new rule is a big step toward respecting truck drivers and their work. It shows the government is now focusing on their well-being. With better cabins:

Benefits of AC Cabins in Trucks

  1. Driver Comfort: AC cabins will help drivers stay cool and comfortable during long journeys.
  2. Better Road Safety: Less heat means less exhaustion. Drivers can stay focused and alert, reducing the chances of accidents. A 2023 report by AITA said 20% of truck drivers suffer from heat-related issues during summer.
  3. Health Improvement: Lower exposure to heat can reduce problems like dehydration, fatigue, and headaches.
  4. Higher Productivity: Comfortable drivers take fewer breaks and can complete deliveries on time. A 2022 FICCI report said driver fatigue causes losses of over ₹50,000 crore each year due to delays and accidents.

The idea of making AC cabins mandatory for trucks was first proposed in 2016. In 2023, the government issued a draft notification suggesting the rule be implemented by January 2025. Later, in 2024, the final notification was released, confirming the rule with a revised implementation date of October 1, 2025. The rule will officially come into effect in 2025.
