The Central Government has approved a new plan to improve irrigation systems for farmers across India. This new plan comes under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) and aims to help farmers get better access to water for their crops.

The name of the new sub-scheme is Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM). The government will spend ₹1600 crore on this project. It will start from the financial year 2025–26.
The main goal of this scheme is to use modern technologies to provide timely, controlled, and sufficient water to farmers. This will help save water, increase crop yield, and improve farmers' incomes.
Modern Irrigation Methods: Instead of traditional canals, underground pipelines will be used to carry water directly to the fields.
Use of Technology: The scheme will use advanced tools like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). These tools will help monitor and manage water supply more efficiently.
Better Crop Production: With better water management, crop production and productivity will increase, which will directly benefit the farmers.
Under this scheme, old canals and water supply systems will be upgraded. Water will reach farms through pressurized underground pipes, making it more efficient and less wasteful. With the help of SCADA and IoT, farmers will even be able to monitor irrigation through mobile apps or sensors.
Before launching this scheme across the country, it will start as pilot projects in different agro-climatic zones. Based on the results, it will be implemented at the national level starting from April 2026, during the 16th Finance Commission period.
To ensure success and long-term benefits, Water User Committees will be given the responsibility of managing irrigation assets. These committees will be linked with local economic groups like Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) for the next five years.
₹1600 crore will be spent to modernize the irrigation network across India.
Underground pipelines will be used instead of open canals.
The scheme will start from the financial year 2025–26.
It aims to increase water-use efficiency and crop yield.
Technologies like SCADA and IoT will help monitor and control water supply.
Farmers can track water supply using mobile or sensor-based systems.
Water User Committees will manage irrigation projects at the local level.
Pilot projects will be launched in various regions before national rollout.
Full-scale implementation will begin in April 2026 under the 16th Finance Commission.
This new scheme is a major step by the government to boost agriculturegrowth and support farmers with reliable and modern irrigation systems.
