UP to prepare 15.90 lakh disease-free sugarcane plants through tissue culture labs to boost production, improve seed quality, and increase farmers’ income with modern scientific technology.
13 tissue culture labs active.
15.90 lakh disease-free plants to be prepared.
Sugar mills assigned the lab setup responsibility.
Higher yield and purity through modern technology.
Lower cultivation cost and better farmer income.
The Uttar Pradesh government is taking major steps to increase sugarcane production and improve farmers income. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state is promoting large-scale seed production through tissue culture technology.
A virtual review meeting was recently held in Lucknow, chaired by the Sugarcane Commissioner. Senior officials, sugar mills with tissue culture labs, Deputy Sugarcane Commissioners, and District Sugarcane Officers attended the meeting to speed up the project.
The main goal is clear, provide farmers with pure, healthy, and high-yielding sugarcane seeds using modern and scientific techniques.
During the review meeting, the Sugarcane Commissioner emphasized that producing pure and improved sugarcane seed is the department’s top priority.
Most sugar mill groups in the state have been given the responsibility to set up tissue culture labs. Regional Deputy Sugarcane Commissioners have also been directed to prepare a list of potential labs in their areas, which will be finalized in the next meeting.
Tissue culture is considered the most reliable, modern, and scientific method for high-quality seed production.
This technology will ensure:
Better quality seed for farmers
Reduced disease and pest attacks
Long-term improvement in productivity
Uttar Pradesh currently has 13 active tissue culture labs, including those at the Sugarcane Research Council and various sugar mills.
These labs will produce 15.90 lakh pure, healthy, and disease-resistant sugarcane plants for the 2025–26 crushing season.
A complete quality check will be maintained from the lab to the nursery to the fields. According to officials, this large-scale seed production will significantly boost sugarcane yields and improve farmers income. The state plans to ensure full scientific support for sugarcane seed production in the coming years.
Plants produced through tissue culture are true to type, meaning they are genetically identical to the original variety.
This guarantees:
100% seed purity
Higher growth potential
Better yield than traditional seeds
These plants produce more crops even in less area, making them highly beneficial for farmers.
Seeds are disease-free and healthy
Higher production than traditional seed
More yield in less land
Uniform crop growth and better quality
Because of these advantages, the department is encouraging farmers to adopt modern methods, while sugar mills are playing an important role in strengthening seed production capacity across the state.
The Sugarcane Department has instructed capable sugar mills to establish their own tissue culture labs. Deputy Sugarcane Commissioners have been assigned targets to develop and expand seed production.
The government believes that tissue culture plants will provide farmers with:
Pure and strong plants
Fast growth
Reduced cultivation cost
Higher production
This will improve the economic condition of farmers and also help increase overall sugar production in Uttar Pradesh.
Focus on large-scale production of pure, high-quality seed sugarcane through tissue culture.
The Sugarcane Commissioner urged sugar mills to adopt modern technology for faster and larger seed production.
13 labs in the state will produce 15.90 lakh disease-free sugarcane plants next year.
Capable sugar mills are instructed to set up their own tissue culture labs.
Large-scale cultivation of seed sugarcane to ensure purity, availability, and uniformity of seeds.
Tissue culture plants will be true to type, supporting strong, uniform, and high-quality crops.
