The Uttar Pradesh government has begun large-scale preparations for the upcoming autumn sugarcane sowing season. The Sugarcane Development Department is taking major steps to ensure farmers receive high-quality seeds for better yield and increased income. This year, the department will prepare 46.1 lakh sugarcane buds (4.6 million) for sowing across the state.
These buds will be produced through base nurseries established directly on farmers’ fields, ensuring easy access to disease-free and high-yielding planting material.

The state government has set a target of 3.20 lakh hectares for autumn sugarcane sowing in the 2025–26 season. Experts suggest that sowing during October–November results in healthier crops, higher yields, and better-quality sugarcane.
This initiative is part of the government’s mission to support farmers, improve sugarcane production, and strengthen the state’s sugar industry.
According to the Sugarcane Commissioner, 64,856 quintals of breeder seed have been allocated to sugarcane-growing districts across Uttar Pradesh. These allocations are made based on the specific sugarcane varieties suitable for each region.
The department has also issued clear guidelines to regional and district-level officers for seed distribution and nursery establishment, ensuring timely delivery of quality seeds to farmers before sowing begins.
Breeder seeds have been distributed from the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council, Shahjahanpur, and other private and cooperative sugar mill farms. The allocation by region is as follows:
Saharanpur area: 5,147 quintals
Meerut area: 5,751 quintals
Moradabad area: 8,319 quintals
Bareilly area: 11,579 quintals
Lucknow area: 16,652 quintals
Ayodhya area: 1,892 quintals
Devipatan area: 5,925 quintals
Gorakhpur area: 5,053 quintals
Deoria area: 4,538 quintals
This systematic distribution will ensure that farmers in every region receive timely access to certified, high-yielding seeds.

The department has prioritized two improved sugarcane varieties for this year:
Co. Lakh. 16202
Co. Sha. 18231
These varieties will be planted using the single-bud method, which helps produce strong, disease-free, and high-yielding seedlings.
Under this year’s program, the department will produce:
20.34 lakh buds of Co. Lakh. 16202
25.76 lakh buds of Co. Sha. 18231
Totaling 46.1 lakh buds across regions.
Region-wise distribution includes:
Saharanpur: 1.50 lakh (Co. Lakh. 16202) and 2.70 lakh (Co. Sha. 18231)
Meerut: 2.00 lakh and 3.10 lakh
Moradabad: 2.90 lakh and 3.20 lakh
Bareilly: 2.68 lakh and 3.47 lakh
Lucknow: 4.44 lakh and 5.24 lakh

Gorakhpur: 2.27 lakh and 2.25 lakh
Deoria: 1.80 lakh each
This structured allocation will help ensure all regions have access to sufficient and improved planting material.
Under the three-tier seed production program, the government will establish foundation nurseries directly on farmers’ lands. These nurseries will use elite sugarcane seed provided by the department.
The goal is to ensure the continuous availability of healthy, disease-free, and superior-quality seed sugarcane for the next planting season. This initiative is expected to significantly boost productivity and enhance sugar production across the state.
According to the Sugarcane Development Department, this new initiative will:
Increase farmers’ income
Ensure timely access to high-quality seeds
Encourage the cultivation of new, high-yielding sugarcane varieties
Improve overall sugarcane productivity and sugar output
With these efforts, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to give a new direction to sugarcane cultivation, strengthening both farmers livelihoods and the state’s sugar industry.
