The Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, has released a list of improved and high-yielding wheat varieties suitable for different climatic zones of India for the 2025-26 Rabi season. These recommendations are made keeping in mind the soil and weather conditions of various states.
By selecting region-appropriate varieties, farmers can achieve better yields with less effort and higher efficiency.
According to the institute, the first week of November is ideal for early wheat sowing.
For timely sowing, farmers should complete the process by November 20.
Sowing at the right time ensures balanced plant growth and helps maximize yield potential.
In states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, where sowing begins in the first week of November, the following varieties are recommended under irrigated conditions: DBW 187, DBW 303, WH 1270, DBW 327, DBW 322, PBW 872, DBW 370, DBW 371, and DBW 372.
For the Central Zone (CZ), including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, the suitable varieties for early sowing are: DBW 187, DBW 303, DBW 327, and JW 543.
These varieties perform well even in warm climates and offer good yield potential.
1. North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ) – Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Western UP
Recommended varieties: DBW 187, DBW 222, HD 3046, PBW 826, PBW 3226, HD 3086, HD 3386, HD 3411, WH 1105, DBW 296, and WH 1402.
These are known for high grain yield, disease resistance, and excellent grain quality.
2. North Eastern Plains Zone (NEPZ) – Eastern UP, Bihar, Bengal, Jharkhand
Farmers in this region can choose: DBW 187, PBW 826, HD 3411, DBW 222, HD 3086, K 1006, DBW 386, DBW 252, and HD 3293.
These varieties are suitable due to their moisture and heat tolerance.
3. Central Zone (CZ) – Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan
Recommended varieties include: DBW 303, DBW 187, HI 1636, HI 1650, MACS 6768, JW 366, JW 547, HI 8759, HI 8830, DBW 110, and CG 1040.
These varieties maintain stable yields in hot and dry climates and are resistant to pests.
4. Peninsular Zone (PZ) – Maharashtra, Karnataka
The best varieties for this region are: DBW 168, DBW 443, MACS 6478, UAS 304, MACS 6222, MACS 4100, PBW 891, and WH 1306.
These perform well even in low temperatures and offer excellent yield potential when sown on time.
