The world-famous Sonepur Mela in Bihar has introduced a major new benefit for farmers this year. The event was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Ram Kripal Yadav, who lit the ceremonial lamp and addressed a large gathering of farmers.

During the inauguration, the Agriculture Minister highlighted that 76% of Bihar’s population depends on agriculture, with 90% of farmers belonging to the small and marginal category. He said that agriculture will play a crucial role in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a developed country by 2047.
The Minister also stated that the Bihar government is actively working on several schemes to ensure timely availability of fertilizers, seeds, irrigation facilities, modern equipment, and technical support. The agricultural exhibition at Sonepur Mela is designed to connect farmers with new-age technologies and help them adopt modern and profitable farming practices.
The Agriculture Department has set up several stalls showcasing advanced farming tools and innovations. Agricultural scientists are guiding farmers on:
Organic farming
Soil testing
Integrated farm management
Micro-irrigation systems
Smart farming and tech-based agriculture
Experts believe that adopting such techniques will help farmers reduce production costs and increase crop yield.
The biggest highlight of Sonepur Mela 2025 is the heavy subsidy offered on agricultural equipment.
For a machine costing ₹42,000, general-category farmers will receive a subsidy of ₹21,000.
SC/ST farmers will receive up to ₹24,000 subsidy.
Subsidies are also available on a wide list of machines, including:
Power tillers
Reapers
Spice mills
Seed-cum-fertilizer drills
Spraying machines
Other modern agricultural tools
This is a golden chance for farmers who were planning to buy machines but were unable to afford them earlier.
To avail the subsidy, farmers must follow a two-step process:
Submit an online application
Collect a permit from the Agriculture Officer at their block
Farmers can purchase the subsidized equipment at the fair only after receiving this permit. Officials confirmed that the subsidy will continue as long as the allocated budget is available.
This agricultural fair is not limited to the Saran district. Farmers from any district in Bihar can visit and benefit from it. The Agriculture Department has also announced that a large-scale agricultural fair will soon be held in Patna, providing more opportunities to access equipment and scheme information.
At the exhibition, experts are also explaining government schemes related to:
Rabi crop management
Smart and timely sowing techniques
Balanced fertilizer use
Pest and disease control
Soil testing and crop-wise fertilizer planning
Officials encouraged farmers to get their soil tested to achieve better yields ata lower cost.
This year, Sonepur Mela has evolved from a traditional cattle fair into a major hub of modern agricultural innovation. With new machines, technology displays, and government support schemes, the fair is expected to significantly help farmers improve productivity and increase income.
The government’s initiative of making modern equipment available at subsidized rates is an important step toward making agriculture profitable, easier, and more technology-driven for farmers across Bihar.
