The month of July has brought heavy rainfall across many parts of India. For farmers, this season is crucial as sowing of paddy and other Kharif crops takes place during this time. However, extreme weather like drought, floods, or pest attacks can destroy standing crops. To provide financial protection, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) helps farmers claim compensation for their losses.
The last date to enroll for the PM Crop Insurance Scheme 2025 is 31st July, as announced by the Government of India. Farmers are advised not to delay registration.

PMFBY is a government crop insurance scheme launched to support farmers during crop damage due to natural disasters. The aim is to minimize the financial burden of such losses and ensure timely recovery.
Farmers pay 2% premium for Kharif crops
1.5% premium for Rabi crops
5% premium for horticulture crops
The remaining premium is paid by the central and state governments.
The compensation amount under PMFBY is calculated using a specific formula:
(Threshold Yield - Actual Yield) ÷ Threshold Yield × Sum Insured
Threshold Yield: Average yield from the past 5 years for the crop in the area.
Actual Yield: The actual crop production recorded after a government survey.
Sum Insured: The total amount covered under the insurance policy.
The difference between the expected and actual yield determines the compensation farmers receive.
If a farmer’s standing crop is damaged within 14 days of harvesting or due to rain, drought, flood, or pest attacks, a claim must be registered within 72 hours.
