The Central Government has released the first installment of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) 2024-25, providing a major relief to farmers affected by natural disasters. On 11 August 2025, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan transferred ₹3900 crore directly to the bank accounts of 35 lakh farmers across the country through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This payment is for the Rabi 2024-25 season and marks the beginning of the claim distribution for this year.
The announcement comes soon after the 20th installment of PM Kisan, bringing double joy to farmers. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to farmers whose crops suffer damage due to events like floods, droughts, hailstorms, and other natural calamities.
If you did not get your crop insurance claim in this first installment, there’s no need to worry. This is just the beginning of payments for 2024-25, and a total of ₹8000 crore will be disbursed later.
The government has also introduced a new rule to ensure timely payments. Suppose an insurance company fails to deposit the claim amount within the set time. In that case, it will have to pay a 12% penalty interest, which will be directly credited to the affected farmer’s account. This change ensures that farmers receive their due compensation without delay.
From Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan urged farmers to insure their crops to protect against losses from natural disasters. He advised them to file claims immediately if their crops are damaged. Officials from the Agriculture Department and scientists will then assess the loss and provide guidance for better farming practices.
