In a major move towards sustainable and affordable farming, Maharashtra launched its first electric tractor, a 45HP model, officially registered at the Thane RTO. The launch was led by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who emphasized its potential to reduce farming costs and support the state’s shift to cleaner energy.
This new electric tractor is built specifically for agricultural tasks. It aims to bring down high fuel and upkeep expenses that farmers typically face with diesel-powered machines.
At the event, Minister Sarnaik said,
“E-tractors need only ₹300 to plough one acre, while diesel ones cost around ₹1,200 to ₹1,500. This means major savings for farmers daily.”
The lower maintenance costs add to the savings, making it ideal for both small and large-scale farmers.
Minister Sarnaik also underlined the government’s broader plan to promote electric vehicles across the state. He said the government aims for 20-30% electric vehicle usage by 2030 and will offer benefits like:

The Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation may provide these interest-free loans to support e-tractor buyers.
An official at the event said that the Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 will offer subsidies up to ₹1.5 lakh for purchasing electric tractors.
“E-tractors come with 60–70% lower operational costs and need very little maintenance,” the official noted, calling it a practical upgrade over diesel tractors.
The launch was also attended by Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil and representatives from the tractor manufacturing company, showing strong industry and government collaboration.
According to Sarnaik, this electric tractor is the first of its kind in India, and Maharashtra’s success may inspire similar efforts in other states.
The focus remains on lowering input costs and increasing income for farmers, while promoting clean energy practices. The combined benefits are expected to improve both the financial health of farmers and the state’s environmental goals.
