The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for Independence Day (15 August) and Janmashtami (16 August). Heavy rains are expected in several parts of the country over the next few days. States like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir may see rain. Eastern Rajasthan could also experience showers between 15 and 17 August.
Uttarakhand: Extremely heavy rain is likely on 13 August, with continuous showers until 17 August.
Himachal Pradesh: Rain will continue from 13 to 17 August.
Haryana, Chandigarh & Western/Eastern UP: Heavy rains expected between 13 and 15 August.
Eastern Rajasthan: Rain forecast between 15 and 17 August.
Northeast States (Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura): Light to moderate rain with thundershowers from 13 to 15 August.
Telangana: Heavy rain expected on 14 and 15 August; rain may continue until 17 August.
Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Yanam: Showers likely between 13 and 17 August.
Rayalaseema: Heavy rain on 13 and 14 August.
Western & Eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha: Rain between 14 and 17 August; heavy rain in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on 13 and 14 August.
Bihar & Odisha: Rain from 13 to 15 August.
Strong winds of 40–50 km/h are expected in some southern regions over the next two days.
The IMD predicts above-normal rainfall for August and September 2025. During this period, rainfall across the country is expected to be 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA). The LPA for August–September is 422.8 mm, based on data from 1971 to 2020. Most parts of the country may receive normal or above-normal rainfall, except for some parts of the Northeast, Central India, and southwest Peninsular India, which could see less rainfall.
Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat are expected to receive normal or above-normal rainfall.
Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, southern Rajasthan, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura may receive below-normal rainfall.
The average rainfall is likely to be 94–106% of the LPA, which is 254.9 mm. While most regions may see normal or above-normal rain, some parts of Central India, western Peninsular India, Northeast India, and certain areas of East and Northwest India could get less rain.
Ensure proper drainage in fields to prevent waterlogging.
Use strong supports to protect standing crops in heavy rain areas.
Apply fertilizers and pesticides only in clear weather.
Store seeds and fertilizers in safe, dry places before rains.
Avoid going to sea during strong wind or heavy rain warnings.
Secure boats in safe places.
