The Rajasthan government has provided free solar pumps to 229 farmers under the Free Solar Pump Yojana 2025, helping them irrigate their fields without depending on electricity or diesel. These farmers belong to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category and received the pumps under the PM Kusum Yojana, combined with state government support. The initiative is proving to be a major relief for farmers in regions with poor electricity and water availability.

This scheme is part of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) and is executed with support from the State Horticulture Directorate and Tribal Area Development Department. In the year 2024–25, solar power plants were installed on the farms of 239 farmers, out of which 229 ST farmers got solar pumps completely free of cost.
As per Dr. Vikas Chechani, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, Dungarpur, SC and ST farmers receive a subsidy of ₹45,000 on solar pumps. For ST category farmers, the remaining cost is fully covered by the Tribal Area Development Department, making the pump absolutely free. In contrast, general category farmers must pay ₹1,01,124 for a 3 HP pump and ₹1,29,221 for a 5 HP pump. For SC/ST farmers, this cost is reduced to ₹56,124 and ₹84,221, respectively, thanks to government subsidies.
Dungarpur is a tribal and geographically challenging district, where farmers face issues like small landholdings, lack of water, and irregular electricity supply. Their irrigation largely depends on rainfall. Recognizing these challenges, the state government launched targeted subsidy schemes to promote solar energy-based irrigation for these farmers. The free solar pumps have provided great relief to these small and marginal farmers.
