K. Senthil Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Sugarcane Industry Department, recently held a detailed review meeting with departmental officials. During the meeting, he emphasized that government schemes should reach every eligible sugarcane farmer without delay. The focus is on improving cultivation practices, increasing production, and ensuring better income for farmers.
The state government has directed officials to prepare a concrete action plan for expanding sugarcane cultivation across Bihar. This plan includes reviving closed sugar mills, setting up new units, and connecting farmers with modern farming technologies. Officials believe these steps will significantly improve sugarcane output and strengthen the rural economy.
To improve yield and quality, farmer training has been made a key focus area. Around 3,000 sugarcane farmers from Bihar will be sent to other leading sugarcane-producing states. There, they will interact with progressive farmers and learn modern methods of farming and value addition in sugarcane and jaggery production.
Departmental officers will accompany the farmers, and after each training program, a detailed report will be submitted. The best practices learned will be implemented in Bihar to give a fresh direction to the sugarcane and jaggery sector.

The government has also stressed the need for special subsidy schemes for sugarcane planting, irrigation, and harvesting. Farmers will be supported financially to reduce cultivation costs. In case of crop loss, crop insurance benefits must be provided on time to avoid financial stress.
To further encourage farmers, a state-level Sugarcane Festival will be organized. Farmers will get information on modern machinery, new sugarcane varieties, and advanced farming techniques during this event.
In another major development, two closed sugar mills in Sakri and Rayam will be reopened. State Cooperative Minister Pramod Kumar has announced that these mills will be operated through the Cooperative Department. Preparations have already started, and once cabinet approval is received, cooperative societies will be formed to manage operations.
Running the mills under a cooperative model will ensure transparency, farmer participation, and direct benefits to local growers. The revival is also expected to create new employment opportunities in the region.
These combined steps by the Bihar government have created fresh confidence among sugarcane farmers and jaggery producers. Mechanization support, farmer training, subsidies, and the reopening of sugar mills are expected to strengthen the sugarcane industry in the state. With assured scheme benefits and modern farming support, Bihar’s sugarcane sector is set for steady growth and better farmer incomes.
