The Indian government is moving forward with a plan to make barren land productive through the PM Kusum Yojana. This initiative aims to use unused or barren land to produce electricity by setting up solar panels. With the help of this scheme, farmers with barren land will be able to earn a steady income by generating and selling solar power.

India has significant amount of barren land, accounting for 16.96% of its geographical area. Traditionally, this land is considered unusable for farming, forestry, or commercial activities. However, under the PM Kusum Yojana, the government aims to generate 2000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from this land. Farmers can install solar panels and earn a significant income each year from the electricity that will be generated.
This initiative will not only support farmers but will also align with India's goals of sustainable energy production.
Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is striving to become self-sufficient in energy within the next three years. The state is focusing on solar and bioenergy to meet its energy needs. As part of this plan, the government has set a goal to generate 2000 MW of solar power from the barren lands by 2027. Additionally, through the Central Government’s PM Suryaghar Yojana, Uttar Pradesh plans to bring solar power to 25 lakh households within three years.
The PM Kusum Yojana has set a clear goal: enable farmers to generate solar power on unused land. By 2027, the Yogi government aims to produce 2000 MW of solar power from barren land in Uttar Pradesh. This will provide the farmers with an additional income source while also contributing to renewable energy production.

To further promote solar energy, the Yogi government is working on multiple projects, including the development of solar parks with a 4800 MW capacity. Additionally, the government is exploring floating solar projects on seven reservoirs in collaboration with NTPC, THDC, and SJVN. The overall goal is to boost Uttar Pradesh's solar power generation capacity to 14,000 MW by 2027.
In addition to solar energy, the UP government is also focusing on bioenergy to achieve self-sufficiency. The government aims to increase the production capacity of bio-compressed gas, bio-coal, and bio-diesel over the next two years. These initiatives are expected to help reduce pollution and create new employment opportunities.
To ensure a stable energy supply for industries, the Yogi government is enhancing power supply infrastructure across the state. This includes setting up new, modern power plants and upgrading older ones to support the region’s growth over the next decade.
The PM Kusum Yojana is a promising step towards renewable energy and economic empowerment for farmers. By turning barren land into a source of income and energy, the scheme brings benefits to both the farming community and the country’s green energy goals.
